I had a great summer at Colorado Shakes. As the ATD for the outdoor space, the Mary Rippon Theater, I faced numerous new challenges. Designing scenery for rotating rep that could also weather a Colorado summer (one that included two hail storms, frequent rain, high winds, and 100+ degree heat) meant lots of best guesses, some trial and error, and a whole lot of problem-solving.

Twelfth Night

The cool Colorado evenings were a perfect backdrop.

Counter-rake

The stage at the Mary Rippon Theatre is raked at over 5 degrees. The designer wanted some playing space that wasn't, so we designed and built a counter-rake for the entire set to sit on.

Late Night Load-In

The crew loading in the structure for the second floor late into the evening to avoid the heat of the day.

The Oculus Window

The stained glass oculus window hung on a pair of lift-off hinges and worked beautifully.

Change Over

The set for Twelfth Night mid-changeover.

Self-Opening Doors

The director needed the doors on Juliet's balcony to open and stay open. We used a simple system of tie line and trim chain to create the effect.
